The error made the girl a symbol of a separation policy that, in her case, did not apply, sharpening the case against Trump's border policy.

What was reported

TIME's reporting on John Moore's photo of a crying 2-year-old Honduran girl said she was carried off by agents, and the magazine put her on its cover beside Trump as the face of family separation.

What actually happened

TIME's online story said agents took the girl away while she screamed. The photographer flagged the error, and TIME added a correction saying her mother picked her up and the two were taken away together. The girl's father told reporters she had never been separated from her mother, and ICE said mother and daughter were held together at a family facility. TIME kept the cover, saying it still captured the stakes of the policy.

The proof

TIME's own appended correction, plus the father's on-record account and ICE's confirmation that mother and child were detained together.
