■ The claim

Headlines said Trump predicted a 'bloodbath' if he lost, which read as a threat of political violence.

■ What actually happened

At a March 16, 2024 rally in Ohio, Trump used the word while talking about Chinese-owned car plants in Mexico and his promise of 100% tariffs on their cars. Many headlines and social posts presented the line alone, and the Biden campaign tied it to January 6. FactCheck.org found the economic reading most plausible given the context, and PolitiFact said the headline-only versions gave an incomplete picture. Several stories did explain the auto context in their body text. The same speech included other contested remarks, such as doubting there would be another meaningful election if he lost, and those remain fair game for criticism.

■ The proof

The rally transcript and video analyzed by FactCheck.org (Mar. 18, 2024) and PolitiFact show the word came in a passage about auto imports and tariffs.
