The Jan. 6 Pipe Bomber: Nearly Five Years Cold, Then an Arrest Built on Records the FBI Already Had
Two viable pipe bombs were placed outside the RNC and DNC headquarters on the night of Jan. 5, 2021, and the case went unsolved for nearly five years with little sustained national attention. In December 2025 the FBI arrested Brian Cole Jr., saying he was identified from bank, phone and license-plate records that had been in hand for years. Prosecutors say he confessed and cited belief that the 2020 election was tampered with.

The years of neglect served no party clearly, and the alleged motive cuts against the theories that grew in the silence.
What the record shows
Surveillance video showed a hooded figure planting the devices on Jan. 5, 2021; authorities said both were viable. Cole, 30, of Woodbridge, Virginia, was arrested Dec. 4, 2025, after investigators traced credit-card purchases of pipe-bomb parts from 2019 and 2020, cell-tower data and a license-plate reader hit. Attorney General Pam Bondi said 'there was no new tip... no new witness,' and a congressional report said the FBI began 'diverting resources' from the case in late February 2021. A Dec. 28, 2025 DOJ filing says Cole confessed, said he believed the 2020 election had been tampered with, and said 'something just snapped'; he later pleaded not guilty to terrorism and WMD charges in a new indictment, and trial was set for February 2027. The unsolved bombing drew far less sustained national coverage than other parts of Jan. 6, which fed years of speculation, mostly on the right, about why it stayed cold. No minute count of that coverage gap was found. The arrest and the confession filing were covered widely by AP, PBS, CBS and ABC.
In their words
“AG Pam Bondi, Dec. 4, 2025: "There was no new tip. There was no new witness. Just good, diligent police work and prosecutorial work."”— · source
The confession as reported undercuts theories that the bomber was a federal plant or a left-wing actor, and Cole has pleaded not guilty and has not been tried. The case going cold reflects investigative choices at the FBI, not only press disinterest.
