MSNBC: Sandy Hook Father 'Heckled by Gun Nuts'
MSNBC posted a video titled to say a grieving Sandy Hook father was heckled by 'gun nuts' at a Connecticut gun-control hearing; local coverage also said he was heckled.
The edited clip cast gun-rights supporters as heckling a grieving parent during the post-Newtown gun-control push.
What was reported
MSNBC posted a video titled to say a grieving Sandy Hook father was heckled by 'gun nuts' at a Connecticut gun-control hearing; local coverage also said he was heckled.
What actually happened
The edited clip cut the moment when Neil Heslin asked the room to give him one reason civilians need assault-style weapons and paused for an answer; gun-rights supporters responded only after that. MSNBC dropped 'gun nuts' from the title, said it was reviewing the video, and later aired the unedited testimony. Heslin himself told CNN the shouted reply was a response to his question.
The proof
The unedited hearing footage shows Heslin invited a response before attendees spoke up.
