Who it helped: Neither party

A process failure about a conservative justice that did not clearly advance a partisan narrative.

What was reported

On the last day of the Supreme Court term, NPR published and broadcast that Justice Samuel Alito was retiring.

What actually happened

Neither Alito nor the Court had announced a retirement. NPR said its correspondent misheard a reference to retirement announcements as she left the courtroom, and a prewritten story was then published in a rush. It was online for about five minutes before an editor's note replaced it, and an on-air correction followed. The reporter apologized to Alito.

The proof

NPR's own retraction and public editor's account, and the absence of any retirement announcement from Alito or the Court.
