A breaking-news error that cast suspicion on a foreign Muslim bystander.

What was reported

Hours after the Boston Marathon bombing, the New York Post reported 12 people had been killed and that a Saudi national was in custody as a suspect.

What actually happened

Three people were killed in the bombing. No Saudi national was ever a suspect; the man questioned had been injured in the blast, and police said no one was in custody. The Post did not promptly retract, and its editor later defended its coverage; days later it ran the separate 'Bag Men' cover.

The proof

Official casualty count of three dead and police statements that no suspect was in custody; CJR documented both errors.
