Who it helped: Republicans

The report tied a conservative leader's killing to transgender ideology before facts supported it.

What was reported

Citing an ATF bulletin, the Journal reported that ammunition tied to Charlie Kirk's killing was engraved with transgender and anti-fascist messages.

What actually happened

The Justice Department warned that the bulletin might not accurately reflect the engravings. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox then described them as including an anti-fascist taunt and internet and video-game references, with no transgender messages. The Journal added two editor's notes about the ATF's caution and Cox's account. It did not issue a full retraction or an apology.

The proof

Gov. Cox's public description of the engravings, the Justice Department's caution, and the Journal's own editor's notes.
