DHS Disinformation Governance Board: announced, paused, dissolved
DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas disclosed the Disinformation Governance Board at a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing on April 27, 2022, with Nina Jankowicz as its executive director. After heavy criticism the board was paused on May 18, 2022, and Mayorkas terminated it on August 24, 2022, after a Homeland Security Advisory Council subcommittee said it was not needed.
Created and dissolved by the Biden administration's Department of Homeland Security.
What the record shows
DHS said the board would coordinate department work on disinformation threats, and press reports named Russian disinformation and false claims encouraging migrants to travel to the U.S.-Mexico border as focus areas. A May 2, 2022 DHS fact sheet described it as an internal working group co-chaired by the Office of Policy and the Office of the General Counsel, stating it had no operational authority. On May 18, 2022 DHS paused the board, accepted Jankowicz's resignation, and asked the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC) to review it. On July 18, 2022 an HSAC subcommittee issued an interim recommendation that there was no need for the board. On August 24, 2022 Mayorkas ended the board and rescinded its charter; the HSAC also said the underlying disinformation work of DHS components was 'critical.'

“The Board has been grossly and intentionally mischaracterized”— DHS statement, May 18, 2022 · source
“there is no need for a Disinformation Governance Board”— HSAC subcommittee interim recommendation, July 18, 2022 · source
DHS said the board had been 'grossly and intentionally mischaracterized' and stressed that it had no operational authority or capability. Jankowicz said mischaracterizations of the board became a distraction from DHS's work. The advisory council that recommended ending the board also said DHS must still be able to address disinformation threats.
