Who it helped: Republicans

The false bulletin briefly handed opponents of the Affordable Care Act a victory they did not win.

What was reported

In the first minutes after the Supreme Court's ACA ruling, CNN and Fox News reported that the Court had struck down the individual mandate.

What actually happened

Both networks seized on Chief Justice Roberts' finding that the mandate was not valid under the Commerce Clause and broadcast that it had been struck down, without reading on to the part upholding it as a tax. CNN corrected within minutes and said it regretted not waiting for the full opinion; Fox issued a statement defending its reporting as facts as they came in.

The proof

The ruling upheld the mandate; CNN issued an on-record statement of regret and correction, reported by Poynter.
