What was reported

Citing unnamed sources, Fox News reported that CIA operators in Benghazi were twice told to stand down and that requests for military backup were denied during the attack.

What actually happened

The exclusive, published days before the 2012 election, became a pillar of the Benghazi cover-up narrative; the CIA denied it at the time. The Republican-led House Intelligence Committee's 2014 investigation found no evidence of a stand-down order. Security contractors continued to say they were told to wait, and a short delay while the CIA sought local militia help is acknowledged, but the 'stand down' and 'denied backup' claims were never corroborated.

The proof

The GOP-controlled House Intelligence Committee report (Nov. 2014) found no stand-down order; the CIA spokeswoman's denial is in Fox's own story.
