The exaggerated injury claim bolstered the pro-police narrative in the Ferguson debate.

What was reported

Citing an anonymous source close to Ferguson police leadership, Fox News reported that Officer Darren Wilson was nearly beaten unconscious by Michael Brown and suffered an orbital (eye-socket) fracture.

What actually happened

CNN reported the next day that a source with knowledge of Wilson's medical records unequivocally denied any eye-socket fracture. The Justice Department's March 2015 report, which also cleared Wilson of civil-rights charges, summarized his medical records: a jaw contusion and neck scratches, with no broken bones.

The proof

The DOJ's 2015 report on the shooting states Wilson did not break his jaw or any other bones.
