What was reported

Relying on US officials, outlets reported that a drone strike in Kabul had destroyed a vehicle carrying multiple suicide bombers headed for the airport, with secondary explosions showing explosives on board.

What actually happened

Early reports passed along the Pentagon's account, and Gen. Mark Milley called it a righteous strike on Sept. 1. Investigations by The New York Times and The Washington Post found no evidence of explosives and identified the driver as Zemari Ahmadi, an aid worker for a US-based group. On Sept. 17 the Pentagon admitted the strike killed 10 civilians, including seven children, and no ISIS-K members.

The proof

Central Command's own Sept. 17, 2021 admission that the strike was a mistake that killed 10 civilians.
