AP: Russian Missiles Crossed Into Poland, Killing Two

Citing one anonymous senior US intelligence official, AP reported that Russian missiles had crossed into NATO member Poland and killed two people.

Who it helped: Neither party

Raised the stakes of the Ukraine war for NATO; not a US partisan error.

What was reported

Citing one anonymous senior US intelligence official, AP reported that Russian missiles had crossed into NATO member Poland and killed two people.

What actually happened

The single-source report raised fears of a direct NATO-Russia clash. Polish and NATO officials soon said the missile was most likely a Ukrainian air-defense missile fired at incoming Russian strikes. AP issued a correction saying it had reported erroneously based on the official's information, and it fired the reporter about a week later.

The proof

AP's own correction, and NATO's and Poland's findings that the missile was most likely fired by Ukrainian air defenses.
