The error attributed bigotry to a slain conservative activist using words that were not his.

What was reported

On the day after Kirk was killed, a Times explainer on his views presented an antisemitic statement as something Kirk himself had said on his podcast.

What actually happened

On a 2023 episode, Kirk had read aloud a post by an X user and then critiqued it. The Times appended a correction saying Kirk was quoting a social media post and went on to criticize it, and that the statement was not his own.

The proof

The Times' own correction and the podcast recording, which show Kirk reading another user's post.
