What was reported

A Times story and headline tied $52,701 in State Department curtain spending to U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley amid budget cuts, illustrated with her photo.

What actually happened

The purchase had been planned and approved under the Obama administration, before Haley took the job; her spokesman had said so before publication. The next day the Times added an editor's note saying the story created an unfair impression about who was responsible, should not have focused on Haley or used her picture, and had been edited.

The proof

The Times's own editor's note conceding the decision was made during the Obama administration.
