Reddit Bans Chinese-Dissident Forum r/real_China_irl

In October 2024 Reddit banned r/real_China_irl, a Chinese-language community of about 100,000 members, many of them dissidents. The ban is documented, but the claim that Beijing or Tencent caused it rests on circumstantial evidence.

Whose side it served: Neither party

The ban hurt Chinese dissidents; it does not map onto U.S. partisan lines.

What the record shows

Human Rights in China reported that the subreddit was first given a temporary ban for 'a lack of management,' then permanently banned for 'violating community rules' after users applied to moderate it. Members who appealed were told the specific reason could not be disclosed. A replacement community, r/RubaoTV, was banned within three hours, which Reddit later said was because it was 'used for spam.' The article notes Tencent's roughly 11% stake and suggests Reddit may have bowed to Chinese pressure, but presents no government order, internal document or Reddit admission tying the ban to China.

The other side

Reddit routinely bans unmoderated or spam-flagged communities under general rules, and the shifting explanations may reflect automated enforcement rather than political pressure; no direct evidence of Chinese involvement has been published.
