Reddit Caps 'Power Mods' After Years of Concentrated Control
Concerns that a few moderators control many of Reddit's largest communities date back at least to 2014, when Reddit capped moderators at three default subreddits. In September 2025 Reddit announced that no one may moderate more than five communities with over 100,000 weekly visitors, enforced from March 31, 2026.

Moderator concentration is a structural issue; the documented record does not tie it to one party.
What the record shows
The Daily Dot reported in 2014 that before Reddit's December rule, one moderator could oversee default subreddits with 'a combined total of 25 million users,' and that the rule capped any moderator at three defaults. The 2025 r/modnews post 'Evolving Moderation on Reddit: Reshaping Boundaries' set a limit of five communities over 100,000 visitors and said it would affect 0.1% of active moderators. From March 31, 2026, moderators over the limit would be 'transitioned out of moderator roles.' Ars Technica reported moderators warning that the change 'will break the site.' Widely shared claims that a specific handful of moderators run a fixed share of the top 500 subreddits come from user-compiled lists and were not found in peer-reviewed research.
In their words
“Mods who remain over the limit will be transitioned out of moderator roles”— Reddit, r/modnews announcement · source
“will help enable diverse perspectives and experiences”— Reddit, as quoted by Ars Technica · source
Reddit's own figure (0.1% of active moderators affected) shows concentration is real but small in number, and many 'power mods' hold their roles because few volunteers are willing to do unpaid moderation. Concentration of control is documented; that it is used to target conservatives specifically is not shown in these sources.
