What was reported

Days after the election, news outlets reported that a man near the University of Michigan campus threatened to set a Muslim student's hijab on fire unless she removed it, and the story was framed as part of a post-election wave of hate incidents.

What actually happened

The university issued a campus alert and officials condemned the reported ethnic intimidation. In December, Ann Arbor police said the incident did not occur, citing inconsistencies in the student's statements, witness accounts and a lack of any surveillance footage. They referred the false report to county prosecutors.

The proof

Ann Arbor Police Department's December 2016 finding that the report was false.
