What was reported

On Rachel Maddow's show, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said data suggested vaccinated people do not carry the virus, and Maddow told viewers the virus stops with each vaccinated person.

What actually happened

The claim was broadcast without pushback. Within days, a CDC spokesperson told The New York Times that Walensky had spoken broadly, that vaccinated people could still be infected, and that the evidence on transmission was unclear. In July 2021 the CDC changed its mask guidance after outbreak data showed vaccinated people infected with the Delta variant could carry and spread the virus.

The proof

The CDC's own walk-back days after the interview, and the July 2021 CDC data on Delta infections in vaccinated people.
