Nina Jankowicz's past statements on the Hunter Biden laptop and the Steele dossier
Critics of the Disinformation Governance Board pointed to statements its director, Nina Jankowicz, made in 2017-2021 about the Hunter Biden laptop story and the Steele dossier. The statements themselves are on the record; whether they amounted to spreading disinformation is disputed, and Jankowicz said they were taken out of context.

Statements by the person the Biden administration chose to lead the DHS board.
What the record shows
In an Oct. 14, 2020 Associated Press story, Jankowicz said of the New York Post laptop reporting that 'we should view it as a Trump campaign product.' On Oct. 22, 2020 she tweeted that the emails did not need to be altered to be part of an influence campaign, and shared reporting casting doubt on the story's provenance. Reporting compiled by the Washington Examiner also cites tweets defending the Steele dossier's origins (e.g., a Dec. 8, 2017 reply to Sen. Lindsey Graham saying his party 'funded the dossier first') and an Aug. 2020 tweet praising Christopher Steele's comments on a podcast about the history of disinformation. In March 2022 a Washington Post forensic review verified roughly 22,000 emails from the laptop drive as authentic while noting that much of the data could not be verified and chain of custody was poor.

“I did not post disinformation.”— Nina Jankowicz on CNN's Reliable Sources (as reported) · source
Jankowicz said on CNN that she 'did not post disinformation' and that her laptop comments, made while live-tweeting a presidential debate, were 'totally stripped out of context.' Her 2020 remarks were framed as caution about a possible influence operation rather than a claim the emails were fake.
