The country's best-known poll lent credibility to claims that Romney was winning.

What was reported

Gallup's final national pre-election survey showed Romney narrowly ahead of Obama, after weeks of tracking that had Romney leading among likely voters.

What actually happened

Obama won the popular vote by nearly four points. Gallup launched a comprehensive review with outside methodologist Michael Traugott, published its findings in June 2013, and overhauled its polling methods.

The proof

Gallup's own 2012 Presidential Election Polling Review (June 2013) documented the error's causes.
