Gateway Pundit names the wrong man as the Las Vegas shooter
Hours after the Las Vegas massacre, the White House-credentialed site published a story naming a man identified by 4chan users as the shooter and describing him as a left-wing Democrat.
The false identification tried to pin the massacre on a liberal.
What was reported
Hours after the Las Vegas massacre, the White House-credentialed site published a story naming a man identified by 4chan users as the shooter and describing him as a left-wing Democrat.
What actually happened
The man had nothing to do with the attack; police identified the gunman as Stephen Paddock. Google's Top Stories and Facebook's crisis page briefly amplified the false identification. The Gateway Pundit deleted the story, and its White House correspondent told CNN the site regretted the error.
The proof
Police identification of Stephen Paddock as the shooter, and the Gateway Pundit's deletion and stated regret.
