Fed a belief that Trump's 2016 win was produced by altered votes.

What was reported

YouGov reported in March 2018 that two in three Democrats believed Russia tampered with vote tallies on Election Day to help elect Trump. Earlier YouGov/Economist polls had found 52% (Dec. 2016) and 55% (May 2017).

What actually happened

Russia's hacking and influence operations were real and well documented. No investigation found that any vote count was altered. In May 2018 the Senate Intelligence Committee said it saw no evidence that interference affected the vote count. The Mueller report covered the hacking and social-media operations but alleged no changed tallies. The belief tracked a coverage climate that often blurred 'election hacking' with vote manipulation.

The proof

The Senate Intelligence Committee's May 2018 findings reported no evidence of changed vote counts.
